Does your NCD expire if you don't have insurance for a year

Hi,
I was wondering if my no claims discount on my car insurance would expire if I don't have car insurance for a period of time.
For example, I am thinking of selling my car as I now ride my bike to work. Does anyone know whether if I do this, but get a car in 12 months time, whether my NCD will still apply then ? I have built up 7 years' worth, so am not keen to lose it.
Thanks,

Hi - normally NCD will remain valid for a gap of up to two years between policies so make sure you get written confirmation of how many years NCD you have.

Alasdair,
Thanks very much - I'll get on to the insurance company when it comes up to renewal time.

Hi,
Do what I did...Bought a classic car, and insured it. I pay £140 a year including Full protection breakdown cover. I dont pay road tax, and I have a belting time at weekends in my Spitfire! It worked good for me, as I would have lost 8 years no claims with worked out about £500 saving on a Focus.
I used Lancaster insurance, as they let me use my no claims as many wont let you. It may be something work considering if you dont get a car within the next 2 years. You could pick up a cheap Mini, with a few months tax and test..
Something to consider anyway...
Regards
Barry
PS Can u not use the no claims on a Bike
