Banks :(

Hi well last year i was charged for a payment without enouh funds and the lady i spoke to on the phone said they wouldnt stop the charge because i had one done before ... but when i went into my own branch the manager said she would do it "just this once"

Now over christmas i rang BT to see if they could delay a DD because the funds wernt there and they said they would try but couldnt promise as the procss has already started ... so anyway we went to cornwall i used my card etc ... and 4 payments were taken without the funds being there ... so now ive had a letter saying that they are going to take £140.00 at the end of this month and im panicking i only get £110.00 going in each week so to try and have the amount there it wil really b*gger me up for the week ......... does anyone have any advice about trying to either get them not to take the full amount at once or maybe to get them dropped ?

please help me ...
Hoping to be a thinner me in 2010!

  • Is that £140 your bank want to take for bounced DD charges?

  • Ring their customer services, and ask them nicely to drop them as they will cause you hardship. Also point out that the Office of Fair Trading have already ruled these "charges" unfair and that you WILL reclaim them via small claims if necessary.

With all the publicity around this at the moment my boyf had no problem getting his bank to reverse 2 charges over the Christmas...

Do you think they will do this even though they refunded charges ealier this year and they told me you can only relclaim ones each year ...

i really dont have a very good way with words so would i just plead and tell them it will cause hardship will this be enough ? altho it is the truth it will leave me with nothing and also with another bt payment due out it will put me overdrawn again !!

  • It doesn't change the fact that the charges have been ruled as unfair, and do not reflect the banks costs of bouncing a DD.

Have a look at the Bank Charges forum here, or the Consumer Action Group website for information on why people are now reclaiming, and arm yourself with the facts before calling.

  • reclaim your charges.

What you could also do is use your £2 coins to tide you over, as reclaiming your charges is a lengthy process

  • if they do take the money and refuse to cancel the charges, go on to the bank charge forum on this website and send them one of the draft letters demanding your money back.

I would phone them and ask for the charges to be refunded, if you dont ask, you dont get!!!! Like others have said, if they still charge you, then send one of the letters - its all worth a try.
