About to have sky broadband and line fitted in need help!!!

OK so I was looking at various websites to see what estimated speed I will get once my Broadband and phone line is fitted in, however all the answers are different! SKY said I should receive between 2.5-7.0 Meg of download speed, however because I do not have a phone line fitted in I need to ask does anyone know where I can get an accurate reading of my download speed or what I should get accurately in my area?
Bare in mind I need to have a phone line installed which will happen in a couple of weeks.
So any help would be greatly appreciated

Regards

in a word, you won't get an accurate estimate from anywhere without a phone line. Sky (and everyone else for that matter) will be relying on the BT database, based on your postcode, and estimating the distance to the exchange from that.

However, until the phone line is installed and you can get a reading from a router of your downstream line attenuation, measured in dB, that is the point at which you should get a fairly accurate estimate of speed.

This is probably the most accurate line speed estimator out there at the moment:-

    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php

pop your line attenuation in here (when you get it) and it'll tell you what you could get under the various types of ADSL for the given base set of parameters (i.e. a good quality copper line at a 6dB snrm). As usual though, a variation on any of the factors will affect the potential speed you could get :)

At the end of the day, the maximum speed of the line will be the same no matter who installs the broadband so there's no reason to change who you intend to go with thinking you're going to get a higher speed. You'd need to change to cable or fibre optical to get a raise in speed.

Use the exchange mapping facility on www.samknows.com to get an indication of the likely speed at your postcode.
The primary factor determining line speed is distance from the exchange, so the choice of provider is irrelevant in that respect, as Hammy says.
But if you're going with Sky, make sure that it is Sky LLU, not the dire Sky Connect.
The normal lead time for a new llne provision is around 3 weeks: again it makes no difference who your provider is, as the work is still carried out by BT OR.

Try asking a few neighbours what theirs is like?
