British Gas Loft Insulation Deal?
Good morning all,
First time poster long time reader.
We've recently moved house and are currently using southern electric for the electric and british gas for the gas. I'm looking into what dual fuel deals are out there.
British Gas tell me that if we go dual fuel with them, they will insulate our loft for free. It's a deal they're doing to help compensate for the price hikes.
I'm tempted by this deal as the new house we've moved to has a draughty loft.
Has anyone taken up this offer? Did they do a good job insulating the loft?
Is there a better deal out there to be had?
Thanks guys.
Kieran

Hi Kie77,
Just a word of advice.. The offer is subject to survey and to qualify to get the insulation brought up to the standard depth (approx 10 inches) your existing material needs to be 2.5 inches or less. If it`s deeper than this already you`ll need to put money towards it and the surveyor would advise you of the cost when they come out.
You might be a bit miffed if you sign up with BG only to find out that you don`t qualify to gt the insulation for free due to the existing depth.
Here are the terms and conditions.

ps you asked if there was a better deal... how do you get better than free?

There is another caveat to the "free offer".
As well as the thickness of the existing insulation there is a square metre limit, however the T&C's do not state what it is.
I applied for the offer and must admit did not spot this requirement. When the surveyor came he said my loft was too big for the offer and I would have to pay some of the cost. Now whilst that may still have been a bargain, on a point of principle I declined and intend to do it myself.0 -
They say that your average 3 bedroom detached should qualify for the offer but any larger may have additional costs due to the area but the surveyor would confirm the exact details.:money:0

Where did "they" say that? Afterwards I could find nothing to indicate the square metre limit. They say that your average 3 bedroom detached should qualify for the offer but any larger may have additional costs due to the area but the surveyor would confirm the exact details.
Incidentally I have a 3 bedroom bungalow.0 -
I used to work for a loft insulation company who did the surveys and work on behalf of some of these companys. A little trick they would do is first off, the surveyor would lie about the thickness to get his commission.... The when we found out the boss's would tell us to skim insulation off the top before installing so if/when inspected it would pass.
If you really wanted too, you could skim it and make it under the level needed to get the free install. Insulation is cheap nowadays though and if you have 100mm inbetween the joists just buy some 200mm and roll over the top in the other direction.0 -

I work for BG and this is what my understanding is.:money:0 -

Simple question:
I have the loft insulated in December.
I'm looking to save money on my energy supplier and the time has come to switch.
I can't see anything in the T&C's about remaining a BG customer after receiving free loft insultation...
Does anyone know if I'm likely to have to pay for the loft insulation if I switch from BG immediately after having it installed?
Many thanks0
