Thinking outside of the housing box...

Have you thought of house sitting? There are lots of agencies out there, people want house sitters for anything between one week or several months. Google house sitting.
IlonaI love skip diving.

Found this dharma as well, hope it's interesting to you. I haven't read the ladies blog, but hopefully get round to it.

I own a static caravan and can bore for England about them.
Briefly, living in one is doable, even comfy, for the warm/mild part of the year, but would be thoroughly miserable in the depths of winter.0 -
Double room with ensuite in a posh/professional house share? It's ok for a couple, difficult if you have kids though!
There's quite a few I've seen round here that are totally kitted out, awesome house including bills for less than rent on a flat!0 -

make sure you get one on the east coast of Yorkshire if you enjoy cold winters in a caravan

Property Guardians look after old buildings and get low cost rent in exchange see http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2010/jan/10/property-guardian-schemes if you can cope with moving at short notice.

Mine's in North Yorkshire.
I don't live in it, but was still using it when we had the early winter last year.
Minus 20 in Leeming, I had frozen pipes, burst pipes, and a toilet cistern and two mixer taps went the journey.
Never again, I might say.0 -
Well after reading this I have just spent the last half an hour on ebay looking at campervans for sale
. (I did see one for £220k on there though!).
I think for me it would be a short-ish term thing - to pay off debts/save for a deposit, or just save enough to own a nice campervan outright! With one of those awnings I don't think it would be too bad. Maybe when my tenancy agreement runs out next year...
I also like the idea that I'd have to get used to living without so much stuff!0 -
I came across a houseboat in my home town but my oh wasn't keen about it. Since found-out that you need a navigation license (even if you never move the boat) at £700 p/a. One advantage of a houseboat however, is that no planning permission is needed to make alterations to it.
In theory, if it is a nice big boat, you could construct a floating block of flats if you so wished.
According to a contact within DWP, if you are on a low income and rent, your Local Authority will pay part of your rent for you. Apparently, a single adult should have £120 per week left after rent, council tax, electric and water have been paid. For each extra adult this increases by £20 and £25 for each child.
You would need to speak with your local council benefits department.Never Knowingly Understood.
