You should have it updating more than once a month, definitely! In a month, the amount of new pieces of malware created could be several hundred.

If it's slowing down your computer, try another Internet security program. Trend Micro is apparently very good for not slowing it down, as its database is kept in the cloud and not on your computer (so there is no need to download updates). Or so the Trend Rep says...

no once a month updates are not enough but any which way you go i would suggest getting rid of McAfee - its crap anyway, remember to run the uninstaller and also download and run the removal tool as it tend to leave other reminents behind which can hinder other antivirus protection

get Avast or Avira - both are free and both offer much better protection than McAfee - Microsoft security essentials is also well thought off however it has had a few bad result on recent tests so am awaiting for it to score better scores a couple of times in a row to show that the bad results where just a blip

so long as you use a router and not a USB modem it will most likely include a hardware firewall (google the make and model to be sure) if it does then just turne on windows firewall as this is a reasonable second line of defence

download and install malwarebytes antimalware as a extra on-demand (only) scanner and run at once a month

check out this sticky https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849 (it is at the top of the forum anyway) as it is very helpful at speeding up a computer as well
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Remove it and Install free edition of Avast or Mse

To remove McAfee software completely from your PC, first use Window's built-in system to uninstall the McAfee software.

Next, run the McAfee Removal Tool (MCPR.exe) from the McAfee site:

McAfee Removal Tool works on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. It is not compatible with Windows 98 or Windows ME

  • i had mcafee and had to uninstall it as it disabled the internet connection on one of my computers. got a refund from them and would advise anyone to not bother with mcafee.
as said elsewhere, plenty of free stuff that does the job adequately.
find a deal....pass it on
