I don't buy Napolina tomatoes as I just buy the basic ones for adding to my spag bol, casseroles etc.

I couldn't believe the price of single cans are now £1.25.

What is so special with these tomatoes? I bet you can't tell the difference in taste if I made a spag bol with a tin/tetra pack of chopped tomatoes with a spag bol with a tin of the above in.

 Hopefully they are that price as the shop is due to have them on offer.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
  • I completely agree although my OH claims he can taste the difference between value and premium brands. I had a look on approved food and there are a few cheap options including a massive tin of Napolina for £2.99. Obviously you have to factor in their £5 delivery charge but at face value the posh organic toms are the same price as Sainsbury Basics or Tesco Value.

    Chef's Larder Chopped Tomatoes 2.5kg

so if i have worked this out right? these big tins are equal to 6 small 400gm tins.. so by buing the large tins it works out at 24p per 400gms

( these large 2.5kg tins are £1.75 each if you buy them individually

Hi middy, l personally think Napolina have a more intense flavour and l would prefer them over some cheaper ones, but not all, you have to buy and try the other ones for yourself.

I will buy napolina when they are on offer down to about 50p a tin (in the 4pks) although it's not very often. I think l last stocked up about 6 months ago and bought 20 cans. Other times l just buy whatever is decent priced in the shop l'm in.

    Happy moneysaving all.

Even better - home bargains have 4 tins £1 chopped tomatoes.
Not napolina but very respectable quality - I've used them quite a bit for cooking.

I can't stand the basics chopped tomatoes anymore for spag bol. I use to use 2 tins (and drain most of the [STRIKE]juice[/STRIKE] water away and add lots of tomatoe puree to make it slightly thicker. Now I use Napolina (when on offer) and need 1 tin for the same amount of sauce that 2 basics tins create. It actually works out cheaper when they're on offer!

If it's not on offer and I have none left, I buy passata! I stocked up on 5 4 packs last time they were on offer. The most I've spent on them is £3 for a 4 tins, which is what it is at Sainsburys at the minute.

I eat a lot of tomatos and can taste the difference in the value vs the Napolina tins...but not to the point where its getting on for +300% difference!

If you want things more intense maybe add some tomato pure. Most tinned stuff is cooked before eating and cooked in dishes, once it boils it does reduce down and there is little if any difference.

The only other difference is that maybe once in a blue moon I get a dodgy tin which has more liquid then normal or the odd unattached tomato skin but nothing that would stop me buying them at a cheaper rate.

Sainsburys value version is the best I think.
