My wife's platinum engagement ring with a single princess cut diamond, bought 7 years ago for £850 has broken. The diamond became detached from it's mounting and it was only luck that my wife found it. Ernest Jones (where ring was purchased) have given a quote of £270.00 for repair. There is a 10 year guarantee for 'any flaw in craftmanship' but this does not cover 'normal wear & tear'. In my opinion this is excessive and I know 2 people ( mother & mother-in-law) who have both had diamond rings without any problems for over 40 years.
Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Tough to prove it didn't catch on something, and frankly over 6 yrs it is no good relying on SOGA any more anyway. Try asking an independent goldsmith/manufacturing jeweller for an opinion and to quote on a repair, might save you a few quid too.

As above find the goldsmith direct.

£270 to repair? That sounds like an awful lot, take it to a real, independent jeweller for a quote, I bet it will cost a whole heap less that that and they'll do a better job.

There would surely be some considerable "wear and tear" over ten years. How long would Ernest Jones expect a ring to last with normal usage over ten years?

I would ask them to provide an explanation of what is "wear and tear" and how it compares to the terms relating to the warranty.

If you are in Leeds or around there, I can recommend a small independent jeweller where we got our engagement and wedding rings. Doltons, upper Briggate. If you're not local to there, any independent proper working jeweller should be able to beat that price.
  • well my fiance bought my diamond white gold ring out of chisholm and hunter (argyle arcade in glasgow which is meant to be famous for the best of the best). may i add this was ONLY 4MONTHS AGO!!!!!! now 2months ago i said to him the gold was starting to show through! and 2weeks ago the diamond fell out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! taken it back, still have proof of purchase, they sent it to head office to test it to see 'if it was a manufacturing fault'?!?! last week they called to say its fine they have agreed to fix it free of charge and will take up till 8weeks to locate a stone for it. today i got a call saying i know have to pay £150 for it to be fixed as its 'customer damage'?!?!! i take it off for sleeping, showering, i work in a call centre so it's not like i do manual labour. i'm sure a ring that expensive is meant to have better quality! i have had £2 rings out of primark that till this day the fake plastic stones have not fell out in comparision to an expensive white gold diamond engagement ring that actually means something and is prescoius. anyone can give advice it will be much appreciated :-)

As it is under six months old, it is up to them to prove that it is misuse that has caused the damage. Ask them what tests they have carried out to determine the cause of the damage?
