How long would you expect flowers from a florist to last ?

Options
My husband got me flowers on Friday morning. I am guessing but I say they cost about £70. The day after they were going a bit droopy (sunflowers) now they are dead and the orchids are fit the bin also before they have even opened up. Should I call them about this or is this expected when now its Tuesday ? Last time we used the florist the flowers were perfect for over a week, They are away from Direct sunlight and heaters.

Actually, yes, do get in touch with them. Sunflowers I would expect 5-7 days of 'freshness', orchids should last for weeks, not days.

Just to check, 1) was it a delivered bunch from the internet (may be delivered by different company than was booked with) and 2) did you follow the directions and trim a good inch from the bottoms before placing them in fresh water (ideally with flower food)?

I had duff orchids from an internet florist once, I called them up, they were very apologetic and a fresh replacement double order arrived post haste. Having spent time in Asia, I know weeks, not days is the expected life for cut orchids!!
  • Not from the internet they are from a local florist. There was not way I could trim the ends at its was made up using the oasis foam into a high display. This is the closest to what I have in the style http://www.olive-branch.co.uk/index.php/spring-summer-bouquet-4.html

Totally correct, i used to buy them regularly when I lived out there.

Drop a soluble aspirin int he water with them, they will last even longer.

Go back to the florist saying there must have been a mix-up with their supplier, as the orchids are already dying, and you're not sure the sunflowers are looking too clever either. Give them a chance to put things right, if they fail to, never go near them again and warn your friends and neighbours. Any florist who doesn't know the appropriate life of an orchid flower is no kind of florist.

It's funny, orchids look like they're so fragile, but they are quite amazing, growing and flowering for months on just a bit of bark.

Excuse me ill post where I like not where you tell me and what are you doing on here unless you have a consumer question. Why dont you pop along the money saver arms since you like it so much ?

Just ignore him hun, he's a troll with duff advice.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
  • Please dont use an aspirin in oasis! Take the orchid out retrim it and put it in water with the flower food provided. When were the flowers delivered? Were they guaranteed? If yes for how long? Sunflowers a good 5-10 days and depending on the orchid anything from 7 -21 days. Smaller Dendrobium and Oncidiums will have a shorter vase life then a Cymbidium or Phaleonopsis. What about the rest of the flowers in the arrangement - How are they doing? Have you been watering the oasis as Sunflowers are very thirsty little creatures especially if the leaves are still on. Most florists would be horrified and if there is a problem with their stock they usually dont know until someone tells them. Ring them up and have a word and you will probably find it will be sorted out very quickly.
