I turn 30 at the end of May and the Wife, me, best mate and his wife are looking to go to the Dam for 2 nights.
Can anyone recommend a cheap hotel for us. Went to Prague last year, but prices are VERY different between the two places

We use Hotel Gerstekorrel, Damstraat 22-24, 1012 JM .
You can book direct, obviously, but if you do some general search of hotel sites, some will give you a link, BUT... with maybee 5- 15% off!! So worth checking it first!!
It's easy to walk to, from Central Statipon, just a straight walk up Damrak.
The hotel is, like many, in seperate buoildings - not blocks or anything, just what I guess were houses, years ago.
Make sure you're in the main one, if you like your breakfast - saves walking down the street 50yds in the morning!!
It's actually over a New York pizza shop. Don't let this put you off, 'cos the shop turns into your breakfast area & UNLIMITED continental style food is served, help yourself!! Get plenty rolls, boiled eggs n stuff, for your day out n about!!
The rooms are small, clean, functional, but NOT hotel luxury. Commonsense prevails here! Your in the centre of town, so no taxi or tram costs! You even get a discount when hiring your bikes, from the guy just in side alleyway. Discount tickets from the hotel lobby.
Pic up a copy of the freesheet mag/paper for hints n tips on what to do - but you'll have your own plans, no doubt.
If you're looking for quick food, chips everwhere, but, look for thre BIG supermarket, just off to your left, as you walk up to hotel from station. It's got lots looooooong steps up to it & has a salad & cooked food bar, just inside the door. The pigeons appreciate it, if you feed them as you feed yourselfs, on the steps!!
I'll give you one more tip - & plenty more if you ask again...
DON'T use the ordinary pleasure barges for a water trip. Check out the small - carry maybe a dozen or so, smaller boats that take you & your friends around all the little noocks n crannies, complete with Heiniken & friendly chat.
Have fun!!
VB
PS I like Amsterdam - guess you've worked that one out!!0 -
Me too mate.Back there in early May.£20 flights all in return with easyjet, but had to splash out £50 a night for a 3* hotel this time, the last 3 times we did it for £30 a night slightly out of town(gasspenplas).Amsterdam is not cheap for hotels.vansboy wrote:We use Hotel Gerstekorrel, Damstraat 22-24, 1012 JM .

One tip,buy the 2 or 3 day tram/metro/bus passes if you need to get around town. The 3 day one is only 13 euros.0 -
I like the Hotel Luxor or the Hotel Avenue. Hotels rooms tend to be on the small side. Both hotels mentioned have nice breakfasts, specially the Avenue Hotel which offers an American style breakfast. Both are within 5 mins walk from station.
Do be careful where you book it as you will find different sites charge different prices. Expect to pay 80 euros for Luxor and between 80 and 100 euros for Avenue.
It's a superb city, easily accessible by train from the airport, and I'm sure you will enjoy it there. Everyone speaks English too.0 -
I recommend priceline where I got the Marriot 4* for £190 for 3 nights mid May. I've also stayed at the Luxer which is a nice hotel but beware, it's in a fruity location!! You are right next to the RLD. If you are going at the weekend expect to pay more than midweek for most hotels. Have fun though, it's a great city.0

I can recommend Hotel Van Onna.
Clean , cheap and ask for one of the new rooms at the top facing the canal.
He doesn't accept credit cards, and he doesn't ask for a deposit.0 -
