Bailiffs and Council Tax

Options
Help please,

My son has today received a demand for 9 months unpaid council tax from a bailiff seeking to remove belongings to cover the debt.

He has had no prior warning or opportunity to arrange payment either in full or by installments.

The amount being asked for is well in excess of the amount required to cover the 9 months especially as he gets a single persons discount but there is no breakdown of the cost on the paperwork.

Is the paperwork legal if it just refers to an area eg London and not the specific council the tax is owed to?

THe money can be made available to pay but not immediately.
What can he do to allow time for the money to be available?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

He has had no prior warning or opportunity to arrange payment either in full or by installments.

Prior to this a Demand Notice will have been issued, a least 1 reminder, a summons and a Regulation 36 notice 'Request For Information form'.

Apart from the bailiff costs the bailiff will gave no breakdown of what the amount is for , they are only given an amount to collect. Only the council can confirm the balance breakdown.

That's just on the letter from the bailiff ?, if so its legal.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
