  • hi thanks for this. explained clearer than the job centre people certainly.

the course is classed as full time. but its only 2 days a week so once he has registered as self employed he will hopefully be working the other 3 days,

he took his p60s down last week when he signed on as we had to wait for the tax office to send them back. the job centre photocopied them under duress but said they cant send them to the appeal people, so have now sent them registered post

imnot sure what he is actually signing for to be honest, he just wanted to know if he could get his ni still paid whilst he was off work. for the 6 or 7 weeks before he started college.

i have only just started my maternity this week so yes am still getting paid, but when i first phoned benefits and asked about him signing i told them i was still working and then would be on maternity for 6 months and they told him to fill a claim in anyway.

i just wished they all knew what they were doing and could give you straight answers

i did find out we could not get any thing off the council tax though as its not a course such as an A level or degree etc its only a nvq 2

thanks for your input, its clear and appreciated

Who told you this? Was it the council? I dont think this info is correct!! My eldest has done various college courses at all levels and is now at uni but ive always had a discount for her. I dont think its the level of course thats important, just the fact they are over 18 and a full-time student.

Have you put your details into entitledto.com? It would give you a clearer indication of what you might get.
  • we have enough to pay the bills on my wages as over the yrs we have both worked full time and got our mortgage low. he cannot find a job with hrs to suit or with a sensible pay, so he will be going to college two days a week and over the course of the next couple of months will be going self employed so he will work for himself.

we wont be struggling i never said we would be otherwise he wouldnt be doing it.

what i needed to know was does he still sign so he gets his national insurance paid for the time being or does he sign off when he starts college next week.

it isnt about wether we can afford to live, its about what we are entitled to, ie school meals etc. and any extra things we can ask for .

as said before we have always worked and paid our taxes.

    thanks for reading. x

Nowadays you only need 30 years of NICs for your pension so, if he's worked all his life, there isn't really much point worrying about signing on or paying them independently. Your contributions when you sign on don't count for future JSA claims; neither will those he pays when he's self employed.
  • coffe and fags , yes it was the local council advice centre that told us we couldnt get a discount because of his course.

older not wiser he is 45 started work when he was 17 so not quite 30 yrs yet, but he did have around 1 and a half yrs off about 10 yrs ago now because he had lung cancer and needed treatments and operations etc so will have to look into it all. he has got a private pension as well though.
