How to use a surge tower

Hi. My surge tower extension has extra bits on for broadband, ethernet etc. Some say "in" and some "out". I've got VM cabled BB and I bought a VM compatible router so that my son can use his Xbox when I'm on the computer.
I think the router has gone dodgy as we now can't use both at the same time. I've re-set it, but it wont configure the settings.
Can I plug the wires and cables into the tower instead of using the router? Will it do the same type of job as a router?
Sorry if it sounds thoroughly dangerous/stupid but I've not got a clue and can't find the instructions for the tower as its couple of years old and I've only ever used the plug sockets themselves.
Fingers crossed someone out there can give me some advise.

no. the surge protection is to prevent electrical damage to equipment
the in/out is simply a pass through and does nothing with regard to networking
your xbox issue is most likely down to an IP conflict.
1st thing to try is resetting all the equipment/machines0 -
Thanks. What a Wally I am!! Will have another bash at configuring the router a bit later.
