ID for Job Interview..Is this the norm nowadays?

My son has got a job interview in retail after months and months of trying...passed telephone interview..got confirmation of 2nd interview in post on friday..stating he has to take either a passport with him or 2 forms of ID one being National Insurance card(which he has) or a FULL birth certificate...We don't go abroad so no passport and only has short birth certificate
-so rang the company straight away and explained and they say nope has to be a full one..so rang registry office in district he was born..paid £11 and now still waiting for it to come through..Interview thursday morning so hoping and praying it comes tomorrow or he's out as such...
Have never come across this before...though is years since i last applied for a job myself..can't believe he can't even be interviewed without it.:(

Most companies want the proof of ID before you start working for them; so they might just be cutting out the hassle of offering somebody a job, finding out they're not able to work in the UK and having to mess about employing somebody else.0

it's quite normal, they want to check that you are able to work in the UK.0

Sorry to sound dim but why wouldn't they accept his short birth certificate and want the long one ?0

There are strict rules on what can and cannot be accepted as ID for the right to work. All employers have to follow the rules set (by UK Border Agency) as failure to check and/or employing someone who does not have the right to work in the UK attracts a nice fine. It is not the employer saying full certificate but the border agency. Can't remember the exact reason why now but it is in the code of practice I think.
ETA: Difference is that the short birth certificate only shows the name, date of birth, sex and registration district. A full birth certificate is a copy of the entry in the register, and includes everything shown on a short certificate, but also includes parents' details and the child's place of birth.0 -

Sorry but from reading this, if he has his National Insurance card then the other form of Id doesn't need to be a passport as it says or.
Can he not take a student card or driving licence or something similar as his second form of Id.0 -
It is to prove his right to work in the UK and companies have to carry out these checks now. A short birth certificate is not acceptable, same as it isn't acceptable when you apply for a birth certificate. If you have applied for the long birth certificate and it is on his way he can tell them at interview, but he will not be allowed to start work until his ID has been confirmed.0

Most I've been to don't do ID checks but some do - generally I've been asked to take a passport and sometimes a utility/bank bill. If it hasn't come through I'ld take the NI card plus another form of ID and say long is in the post. They should only need it really before he starts work.0

Sorry but from reading this, if he has his National Insurance card then the other form of Id doesn't need to be a passport as it says or.
Can he not take a student card or driving licence or something similar as his second form of Id.
Sorry if i didnt explain it properly..it was a passport or 2 other forms of ID -Full Birth Certificate was only other option along with NI card (other forms of ID were driving licence but hes only just applied for prov as hes just turned 17) and doesnt have any bills with his age either.If it doesnt arrive tomorrow i'll ring them again and stress the birth certificate is on its way-thank you all for advice .0 -

And why can't he ring himself? You're not doing him any favours if you do it.0 -
Ditto the above. An employer is going to get a bit concerned about the maturity of their potential employee if mummy or daddy has to ring up and speak to them. Let him do it.0
