If you know what you're doing you might be able to pick up a cheap bargain and make a profit out of it, but you could equally well end up worse off than if you hired through one of the more expensive hire firms! Apart from anything else, you'd be insuring another vehicle in addition to the one which is off the road: you might be able to reduce the cost if it is genuinely off the road, but no guarantees.
It's sometimes worth phoning around small garages to see if they do car hire as a side line. Ours does, no courtesy cars but if you really need one while yours is in for repair they have a few bangers: safe, legal but not pretty!
You could repost this - or ask the board guide to move it - to the Motoring forum of the Travel board.
And the best place to ask car questions is in The Back Room of Honest John - you'll have to register, but it's painless. You would also get a more informed answer to the insurance question than I can give.
Finally, if you decide to pursue buying a cheap car to keep you mobile for a couple of weeks, there is no finer site than Bangernomics.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I was looking for a hire car while I go on a business trip. Tried all the usual places and found Ryanair's link to Hertz to be the cheapest so far but its still £43.38 for about 2 days so not exactly cheap for you.
If I find anything else I will let you know.0 -
