Moving Next Door / Keeping Exisiting Number / Virgin Masterthread

Yeh, ok, it might just be me, can't imagine this thread running to 300 pages!
But i'm moving. Literally next door. We're with Virgin Media for phone. And we're moving to a house that also has Virgin Media cable. Handy you would think.
Obviously, same phone exchange as well. Now, I have posted in the Virgin Retention Thread as outside of contract about new deals.
However, they have said - regarding keeping our existing number of 10 years - 'cannot be guaranteed' - ok, i'll accept that it is just them erring on the side of caution.
However, they followed that up with 'What we'll do is assign you a new number, then try and rescue your old number'.
That doesn't make sense to me. That sounds like in fact they are setting me up to then say 'oh it wasn't possible i'm sorry'.
So, what i'm asking is have / do people (especially those on Virgin Media) been able to transfer their old numbers fairly easily? And if so, did the above reflect how it was done?
Or am I being set up for a fall? I havn't signed up yet, so could go with BT or Sky if I had a better chance of keeping old number.

No - the number porting process requires a number to have it allocated to - especially if you were on Virgin National and are now switching to Vrgin Cable, I recall hearing they have to nominally 'return' the line to BT (as it is their number) then have it repprovisioned as a cable line. Fingers crossed! Just explain that the retention of the number is a requirement of the requested service, and whilst you are flexible as to when it will be provided, you are requiring due diligence on their part to ensure nothing untoward happens to it.0

I've done a few of these, mainly in student areas. It's a simple matter of providing a temporary number to the line, then once the install is complete they have to switch the numbers out once the installer has closed the job card down..I've never heard of them having to take the number back to BT & then try & get it back, maybe you do with VM National but not cable.
You may not be on the same street cabinet,I've been to jobs where the same semi detatched house goes to two different cabinets & be off a different Mux (phone exchange) as well.
Although what I have known them to do is leave the provisioning alone & just change the connections over in the Street cabinet & Mux,just do an address change on the account.0
