Absolutely not, we have given ourselves a target of sorting things out in the next two years and I plan to live rather frugaly in those two years. I am not a mean person, I will just take the more Frugal option. If you come to my home I will offer you a cuppa and some biscuits, own brand biscuits. You know when you ask someone if they will have a cuppa and they prob say no first time but you say go on you will & then put the kettle on anyway. I have a 'friend' who will ask and when you say no that is it, wont be asked again and he breathes a sigh of relief because he has spared a tea bag and the cost of boiling the kettle.
WOW - thats amazing! that really is mean!0 -
Your example is quite different, I'm sure you didn't expect it and were grateful for the treats you were offered. Did you ever make an arrangement to go out and assume you would be taken care of, without prior discussion?Just a quick one to balance it up a little...
When I was a student the boot was pretty much on the other foot. When I was out with friends from uni, we would all pay our fair share as we were all in the same boat, but at family occasions it was different. The fact was that my parents have quite expensive tastes (much to their detriment years later) and would go to fairly good restaurants and pubs for birthdays, at Christmas, and even just for the sake of it. When I told them I couldn't afford it, they offered to pay for me, as they would rather I was there, than me being absent and them saving some money. They still didn't quite get that when I said I couldn't afford it, I meant I couldn't afford the restaurant, drinks, taxi, and train fares to get to and from uni, so I ended up still spending money I didn't have anyway. It didn't feel good to know that I'd missed paying for a round, or I was getting my meal paid for, but to be fair a round would cost me the same as a week's food shopping.
I think we've all got mean friends, I'm however known for my generosity, as I find pleasure in giving. One friend I have is serially mean, again lives with her parents approaching 50, has a top job but very low-quality tastes. There's no point in accumulating money if you can't enjoy it when you need to!
Not so long ago I went out with someone new, in my rush to get there on time I left my purse at home in my everyday handbag. I was absolutely mortified when I realised, not only because I always pay my way, but because I feel vulnerable w/o any means of payment (and had actually planned to pop into the local 24-hr supermarket on the way back). Skin-flint date first bragged about his wage, then had the nerve to ask me if my work is lucrative and then "joked" that I am mean!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
