Skoda Octavia - new key help

I've just bought a second hand Skoda Octavia 2003 which has come with only 1 key. Any suggestions on the most cost effective way to get a working spare and avoid over-inflated dealership prices?

    Timpsons and other locksmiths now often do car keys as well. However, if it's a remote and there's a security chip which has to be programmed it'll still cost a fair bit..I was quoted £75 for a replacement Vauxhall Zafira key -- cheaper than the main dealer but still more than I'd have been prepared to pay. Worth checking though.
    Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

    I've bought a similar car for my other half.

    I bought a key from these guys;

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-VOLKSWAGEN-MK4-GOLF-BORA-PASSAT-REMOTE-ALARM-KEY-FOB-/290606739357?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43a982ef9d

    Got it cut by a local locksmith and will programme it my self. (I have the software/cables etc as a VAG trained Techie)

    If you go down the ebay route make sure you get a key with a blank transponder chip. Once their written to that's it.

    Total costs for me are;

    £32.50 for key
    £6.50 for key being cut
    £0 for programming (you need the SKC from the clocks and also access to the car for remote control programming)

    Point to note..... if you get an ebay key.... most highstreet key cutters won't go near you with a very long pole.

    Couple of questions you may or may not be able to answer for me, if I go down this route...

    Can I programme these keys with the ignition / drivers door method explained on the net, or do they need coding with the software?

    I don't have my SKC code, is this obtainable through the software or do I need to pay a dealer for it?

    I have the old style key, if I buy a 'flip' style key off ebay will that work with my car?

    Thanks for your help

    Is the old style key a remote key (non flip)?

    A dealer won't / can't give you the SKC as the system was changed around 2005. However there are plenty of companies who could get it out of the clocks. Auto locksmiths have this ability.

    You can't used the ignition / drivers door method to program the immo chip.

    The key I have is the old style (non flip) with 2 buttons to lock/unlock the car's central locking system.

    Any recomendations for the Midlands area (Wolverhampton)?
