a quick google of your car brings up a common problem of egr valves
this would cause irratic idle issues if it stuck open but if it was this and the garage had any decent diagnostic equipment they should have been able to actuate this in situ to see if it was indeed the problem
of course an open egr would also upset the exhaust and may even make a poor tech consider a cat issue
