Overseas Transaction Fee ... SANTANDER !

I now have a Toontown [not sure if anyone will have heard of this online game] subscription coming out of my Santander Prefered Current account. I got charged the subscription plus £1.25 overseas transaction fee ... clearly I wasnt overseas this is simply an American company [Disney]

Question is do I have a leg to stand on getting it back ?

Is there anyway to avoid this i.e use paypal for subscription or different bank ?

Thanx for any help :D

Was the transaction "in a currency other than sterling"? If not, then I'd try arguing that they've charged you not in accordance with their published tariff.

See the 'travel money' section on this website.
  • Pay it on a credit card instead of a debit card!

You may not be overseas but the transaction is and it is in a foreign currency. Hence why the fee.

Halifax Clarity Credit Card - no foreign exchange fees.

Or the Santander Zero credit card, which is now only available for existing customers...

The Zero card is only available to customers who already had it before it went off sale. It's not exclusively available to Santander customers, it's just off sale to new applicants now

May I ask how? ie was it incorrectly applied as I speculated in post #2, or have they done it out of goodwill (because it would be cheaper than dealing with a complaint and having to investigate the Disney website T&Cs etc)?

They said goodwill however of course they would hence not to accept liability however one representative did agree the terms were a 'unclear' ... hence I got the £1.25 back and ontop of £18.75 goodwill !
  • If this is a recurring transaction do you expect to get it back in future?

See my post on this and change it to a credit card.
