Strange Siren Noise Coming From Laptop!

Over the past 24 hours my laptop has periodically emitted a siren type wailing noise. Moving the volume wheel doesn't affect the sound level of it, and it's occured during a variety of tasks, including when I booted it up & it hadn't even got past the bios bit!!
It's never done it before in the 7 years I had it, and I've never heard of anything like this before any ideas? I've run a virus check which came up blank.
In the last few days I've also had an impending disk failure error message  could this be it? I never heard of an audio alarm for something like that before & the siren noise wasn't going off at the time that popped up.
