Alternatives to bedside tables

Ideas required!
I'm moving house and the master bedroom has a chimney breast which the bed is going to go against. The trouble is that the chimney breast is wide enough only for the bed and not bedside tables also. The depth of the chimney also means that if a bedside table is put outside of the chimney it would be further back than the bed in its entirety.
So I'm looking for another solution to the issue of bedside lights and alarm clocks. Anyone got any suggestions?

Shelf on chimney breast above the headboard? Clip on lights either end?
Build false wall across the gap either side of chimney breast so bedside tables are brought forward?Herman - MP for all!0 -
wall lights, or use a radio-control lightswitch.
I have to have a bedside table for my tea-mug.
What about a small trolley that can go in front of whatever goes in the alcove, but moved out of the way if access is needed?A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
Have you thought about those over bed type unit that you can buy in Ikea, sorry for not explaining it very well but it's a top and two sides that fits over the top of your bed.
Failing that (and I'm not sure what type of bed you have), have you thought about getting a clip on bedside shelf.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
We have the same problem so interested to hear any other ideas. At the moment our bedside tables are in the alcoves miles away from the bed!0

What about a small stool?0

All very good ideas. You can buy those shelves that a square shelves that might look quite neat - these sort of things? You could dig out a space at the back for the wire from the lamp to neatly fit.

Build ottamans into the alcoves and put your bedside table in front of them.
Will give you extra storage in what would be dead space.0 -
All great ideas, thanks guys! I'm liking the false wall idea - the chimney wall itself requires a replaster so any false wall could be included in that to make it a smooth join. Also like the idea of incorporating some storage into the false wall - recessed lighting too. Think I need to do some doodles!
