just had some Tesco lamb "steaks" for dinner, horrible mess trying to cook the damn things fell to bits when turning them its clear these weren't cuts of meat more like cheap burgers.
are shops allowed to market formed meats as steak? I was under the impression a steak had to be an actual cut

"A delicious reformed rosemary and mint
flavoured lamb steak"
At a 1/5th the price of real Lamb I imagine it was these. If so they would need to be cooked from frozen or they'll fall apart.0 -
it was the BBQ rosemary & mint ones, I didn't buy them myself and couldn't see anywhere on the box that said they were reformed.
spose the price does give it away, they were cooked from from frozen though but they practically turned to mush when I tried to turn them!0 -

Yep, that's what happens.
Years ago, I didn't realise and bought grillsteaks (or steaklets, something like that) and they were just glorified burgers.
If unsure in the future, just check the meat content, that usually gives it away aswell as the price.
And if it's fresh meat, you can almost always see the contents through the packaging.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
A few years ago,I bought a box of burgers from the CoOp called "Butchers Boy".When I ate one it was like chewing gristly cardboard, heck even my cat wouldn't touch it! So I binned them.
A while later, the was an item on the local news that the firm who made them was fined a few thousand quid as the burgers contained less than 5% meat, the rest being MR meat & trimmings.0 -
I work in IT for food manufacturing companies and seeing what goes into 'cheap' burgers and sausages puts me off them 100%. I would always now get them from a local butcher who you trust. You do pay more, but they don't shrink like supermarket ones.
One thing that you could do is complain to the supermarket. I beleive they hardly ever argue, and will refund. They then however claim it back from the manufactures in fines. The supermarket never loses. If we all did this, maybe the supermarkets would insist on better quality from the suppliers. However, I do know the supermarkets hammer the manufactures so they have to do it cheap to keep the business. So, it's back to the solution of local butchers where you can. I do appreciate though that if budgets are tight this isn't possible.0
