I bought a satnav unit over the internet 22 months ago it went back for repair after 5 months, then again after a year and repaired again (same fault and froze) but the unit went wrong again 2 weeks (same faults again) ago since then I have tried to get it sorted by both the manufactuer and the retailer both state it is the others responsibility! I have recieved an email from the retailer stating that the unit is now old (tough basically) and it has lasted a reasonable amout of time.

How long would you expect a sat nav to work for??

well my tomtom go 910 is 5 years old and is still going strong, my mobile phone also has GPS and is 4 years old and still fully working.

not really sure how long it should last for but at the moment I would say that the device should still be working after at least a minimum of 6/7 years (obviously not including the maps that do go out of date),
I would say that less than 2 years is definitely not long enough and would probably expect the average life cycle to be about 4 years, where changes in the roads and the better hardware of newer models would justify an upgrade of device as opposed to upgrade of the maps.

I would agree with that and be asking Trading Standards is it lifespan reasonable ..

Any responsibility is with the retailer not the manufacturer .

What make is it by the way .

It should really last until the manufacturer doesn't think it worth producing the maps for that particular SatNav...

My first TomTom lasted just short of 2 years (brought in 2007) before it refused to turn on, the second TomTom (an XL) ive had since 2009 and only has minor hissy fits but still works (sometimes the screen goes a bit funny in start up or it'll refuse to turn on until its been on charge for a few mins but its never died on me during a journey).

I suppose the answer is relative to the initial price of the unit over useage. Although your unit was probably a Friday production model. You have been very unlucky in my opinion.

I had one of the first of the Navman Satnavs and I have recently sold it on Ebay, still in good working order, after about 5 years of useage. Over a year ago I purchased a Navman M400 and it is running great and I expect it to for quite some time.

I think that its always worth contacting the manufacturer and having your findings.

    regards
  • Thanks for your replies I think 4 years would be reasonanble.

I am now waiting to hear back from the retailer (satnav easy) who are consulting thier legal department. Will post result.

I was just about to throw mine out, after getting a new battery for it (£10 from an Ebay trader....NEW) But found out it was a dodgy charger, after all that. It wasn't holding a charge - even though the lights told me it WAS charging, as the pin on the end of the car charger wasn't springing back and forth, in the cigarette lighter/charger in my car.

So, check all your chargers for your unit are definitely working....I was really chuffed to get my TomTom 520 back on the road....and it is 6years old.

    :T

  • I bought my TomTom Go 910 in 2006 ready for a trip to the states and it is still going strong. It's predecessor, a Go300 that is several years older, is still in occasional use by the wife although it has to be powered externally by the lighter socket as the battery doesn't hold charge.
