Using everything in freezer

  • Thanks for that - do they have a zip-seal or something like it? Sorry to be a pain, but I'm a bit confused by the picture on the website. Do the bags actually have handles as in the picture, or are they more or less regular sandwich bags?

I've definitely been impressed with Lakeland's quality so far!

This is something I really need to do! I batch cook regularly but then loose focus on what I've made:confused: . I need to get some freezer proof markers or some kind of system to identify what I've done. I liked the idea of the magnetic wipe clean sheets for the fridge. Anyone got any good strategies/equipment to help them keep track?:o

Frankly I need a clear out all round so I'll probably join the storecupboard challenge!

Tip from this board (sorry I can't remember who the OP was):

Stick a strip of masking tape across the top of your food container. Then you can just write contents and date on it, and it'll peel off when you use the contents.

Quick question: Whilst emptying my freezer over the course of the last month, I have found a half-eaten packet of Aunt Bessies pre-prepped roast potatoes, and half a bag of pre-prepped parsnips (must be from my pre-OS days :o ) anyway, was wondering if I cook them through in the oven will they be ok to make into a soup?

    TIA x

jcr16 - sorry to hear about your freezer. was that the full price and not the price you paid ie no reductions as you would have to pay full cost to replace these items.

re the chilli - try chilli & chips, chilli & rice, chilli wraps, chilli nachos with cheese on top, chilli eaten with tortilla chips, chilli lasagne. obviously, this will only work if you already have the stuff inas you don't want to spend anything but might help break up the monotony.

I find them very good quality, which is why I keep buying them.
No zip seal I'm afraid - not even a "turn over" top or handles - just a straight bag. What you see in that picture is the bag they come in (packaging). That hangs on a hook (mine is behind the kitchen door), and you open the front and then take a plastic bag out (imagine the opening of a tissue box).
If you are not sure what size you want they do a pick-a-bag here http://www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/!1070 which is the same thing just not fancy packaging, but 3 sizes of bags to hang
If you don't want to hang them, they do a box, inside the bags are on a roll and you tear each one off http://www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/!1086_1082_1090

    Hope this helps :)

um that was full price items, as i didn't have anything in there reduced. as where i am running freezer down i had used the items with the shortest dates first , if u get my drift.

tonight is chilli with rice , but i do have pittas which will go nicely with chilli , also i have some potatos so gonna make a layer thingy with chilli and spud , then a chilli pizza.

so although we are having alot of chilli , it will be eaten in different variations. but thanks for extra suggestions.
  • Thanks TKP that helps alot!

Freezer had got to lid only just shutting point and finding the bottom was a distant memory.

This is the stage our freezer is in. Im avoiding the freezer section in the supermarkets at the moment until Ive emptied some of it out! My daughter was looking for some pizza the other day and said there werent any in there. Well Ive had a good look through today and there are the pizzas - buried at the bottom, yes, but there all the same!

Has anyone not tried putting their inventory on the computer? This way its easy to delete and add things. I keep meaning to but wanted to empty the freezer out a bit before attempting it!!!

    Freezer experiment - day 2
last night's dinnner was what turned out to be an unpromising quantity of beans in a sweet and sour sauce type thing which i don't remember at all. I stirfried some veg and noodles and added the beans and sauce. I thought it was horrid but luckily didn't say so as everyone else loved it
parent's evening tonight so we're treating ourselves to fish and chips

I find that when I try to empty the freezer I end up refreezing dishes I've made with the leftovers!!!!!

so that chicken gets used for a roast, but them I will pick the chicken for a leftovers dish, and then on top of that the carcass goes back in the freezer, with some of the picked bits to make some stock and for soup. SO I end up with it back in the freezer.

I have every intention of emptying my freezer but it just seems to be breeding everytime I shut the door!!!

today I'm making soup form the roast chicken carcasses (2) and leftover sorry looking veg from fridge, and some out of date soup mix with dried haricots thrown in too.
I've got 2 packs of braising steak out to do in the slow cooker for tomorrow night.

but in the freezer I still have a turkey, a large goose and a duck, a huge legg of lamb and a pork leg joint plus loads of outdoor reared pork and organic meat chops, steaks etc. and veg - its literally hard to shut the drawers theyre so full.

will get there in the end but we have meat 3 - 4 times a week and veggie meals the rest of the week so its going very slowly.
