  • My mum used to do this, problem was she had never labeled anything she had put in there as leftovers. It made it very interesting in the evenings when we wouldnt have a clue what we were about to eat.

I would agree with making a list and sticking it up so you can use it to meal plan. Either that of have a family who doesnt mind eating a surpise!

I'm doing it at the moment. Did it about five months ago and it was really good.

Haven't been to the shops since New Years Eve and hoping that I've got enough for at least the next four or five days.

I only have a 3 drawer frost-free freezer so it's not likely that I'll forget what's in it. It's mostly filled with reduced price meat, couple of bags of frozen mushrooms and spinach, and HM bolognese and soup.

I've recently frozen a pound bag of chilli flakes (after I refilled my little jar) so wouldn't be able to eat that in a hurry! Not to mention my henna - definitely not for eating!!!

I'm going to try this for the next few weeks. We've still got stuff in the freezers from christmas, also got lots of curries, soups and casseroles that I freeze for oh's lunch which we could probably use for evening meals as well as theres so many of them, both freezers are so full no body wants to go in and look for anything :rotfl: kinda defeating the objecrt really. Will try and have an inventory later on in the week once I've managed to use up some of the food. I will combine this with a store cupboard challenge as well, save some money.

Well I admire you all for getting in there and sorting it all out! My Huge upright freezer is stuffed to the hinges with all kinds of things, but I dare not venture too far in as I don't know what I may find.
I wish I was organised enough to do an inventory - trouble is that if I was to drag everything out I probably couldn't identify most of it until it was defrosted, thus defeating the object, or alternatively I wouldn't be able to get it all back in.:rotfl: There are things in there that have evolved into a new species.:D

I did an inventory of my freezer today. It's only small luckily and is frost free but was filthy! I managed to give it a good clean without stuff defrosting though

I found I had enough meat and fish for 56 meals for me and OH. And I have 64 pikelets in there! Unfortunately they don't even fit with our new healthy lifestyle.

I've made meal plans for the next two weeks and I put everything frozen I will need in this time in one drawer to make it easier. I am so going to be organised this year!

It seems like Jan is a popular time to do this - we are doing it too.

I've done a shop today and had it delivered but it was just fresh veg/bread/milk etc.

I found a strip of lush shower gel 'pods' halfway down our chest freezer the other day.

We've got too much freezer space. A chest freezer, a 4 drawer freezer attatched to a fridge - both of these are in the garage. AND we've got another fridge freezer in the kitchen
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

You could try a white board, good for adding to and crossing off on lists, or even on the computer make a list if you would find that easier. I tried a white board but my 5 year old is very tall, and where I can reach to have one, he can and kept rubbing it out and drawing on it, he thought that was hilarious! I have mine in my notebook now which is where I do meal plans etc but it can get rather messy, rubbing out and adding etc.

Cheap stickers for labels try a roll of masking tape, works for me :) comes off the tubs etc easier than other sticky labels too when washing.

My friend proved labels are a must, rhubarb pie with peas and gravy and savoury mince pie with custard for her DH didn't go down well!
One day I might be more organised...........
