Co-op Privilege Premier

Hi,

I signed up for the free offer of 12 months last year when they were running it. I've been hoiked by premier accounts before (was upgraded at lloyds, it was only when seeing on MSE that you can have the "vantage" without paying for it that I downgraded, that's what I thought I was paying for pretty much), but this seemed to be (was) a no lose offer.

Its done its job though, because I am thinking about keeping it! Benefits are good - I know Martin thinks very badly of these accounts but this one does look like a bit of value (for me anyway!) IMO:

RAC breakdown cover (home and roadside) - person not vehicle - UK and Europe
Decent Travel Insurance - Worldwide
Mobile Phone Insurance (4 phones) - 25 quid excess although they have gone to 50 on iphones - I've got 4 insured via the policy and 2 are iPhones, I assume that would be almost 13 quid a month to do alone anyway!
Gadget cover to £1200, £25 excess £50 for laptops/tablets, again I have a laptop, netbook and ipad so pleased to get those covered outside of the home insurance. One gadget can be the whole £1200 or it can be a series of them.

The Gadget cover is a choice of three "extras" but its the one that suits me most. If its a joint account you both get the RAC cover wherever you are which is the only way I could get more out of it (unless family had 4 iphones I suppose!).

I really feel that's good value at £13 a month - am I being lazy/a mug?

  • Without looking too closely, as a rule these accounts only usually come close to being good value if you are using the majority of the benefits.

From what you have posted, that appears to be the case here - it appears that the Privilege Premier with Gadget could almost have been custom-made for you, so unless you are happy to trade off one or two of the benefits I think you'll have trouble beating it (although that probably places you in a fairly select group!)
  • Thanks for the reply - I don't know how competitive mobile phone insurance is, but its that in particular that really suits my needs. 4 phones, that you don't need to register - pretty good coverage (IMO).

Of course they may well change the goalposts in the future, but I'll be watching! They already changed the benefits on some of the policies - gadget and travel for the better (it seems), but safeguard (ID theft protection etc) for the worse, so its clearly something to keep an eye on.
  • I am also planning on keeping mine - even if it just for the 4 mobile phones insurance, travel insurance / European breakdown cover (£10 a day if purchased individually - or £100+ a year)

Far better value than Lloyds for example.

No real plans to use the account, instead just pay for the benefits.
  • Works for me too. Especially good value for joint accounts, as we get 2 x RAC vehicle breakdown cover as well as worldwide travel insurance, 'free' access to 2 x Experian credit records and 4x mobile fone insurances.
    Ethical moneysaver
