Independent Traveller / DIY Trip - Insurance?

I've booked the parts of my holiday individually - flights and accommodation. I believe this makes it a DIY trip / Independent traveller scenario, and hence something you need to watch for travel insurance wise.

I was looking at the Sainsbury's Gold card a few days ago and considering that, I looked in hte terms and conditions and it did mention this kind of cover explicitly and state what it covers. I've since decided that this deal may not be so good as it's essentially 60 quid a year with little other benefits to me and I've not got a partner or kids which would fall under it either, so I looked to some other providers, Virgin and Debenhams for one (which looked near on identical because they're both underwritten by the same firm).

Can anyone who's got experience of such trips and has insurance give me an idea of the sort of things I should be looking for? The Virgin terms don't make it clear whether they cover it or not. Also if anyone in this situation has recommendations of good deals for such cover that would be welcome too (inc. cover to the US too).

Thanks in advance...

I've done most of my holidays DIY and never found it a problem with insurance. I know that with a package if the airline goes bust for example your whole holiday will be protected but if you go DIY you'd have to use your insurance to claim against the loss if you couldn't reach your accommodation. I haven't had any problems finding insurers and so many people do DIY these days I didn't think it would be an issue
