Cna someone tell me what I can bring back?

Only really wanting to bring back fags and purfume.

Thanks

Portugal is inside the EU, so there is no "duty free" allowance. Subject to baggage allowances etc. you can bring back any stuff bought in Portugal (with local taxes paid) , for your own use.

There are some limits though .... I think it is about 3200 cigarettes.

It's amazing to think that Duty Free allowances between EU countries haven't existed for about 20 years but the news doesn't seem to have got through to people yet.

The change finally came in on 30th June 1999 actually but I get your point.

I stand corrected. I thought it came in with the EU Single Market in 1993.

It was 1st proposed in 1991, then due to be implemented in 1993 but appeals by the UK, France and Germany, as well as a period of transistion, meant it was finally stopped in 1999.

You can still buy true duty free cigarettes, from the bars, on cross channel ferries, for consumption on board. The bar staff might sell you 2 packs of 20, if you ask them nicely.

this is a myth put about by the UK Customs !
    Legally there is no limit
They would like you to believe there is a limit after losing an appeal against a legal challenge from Hoverspeed in the courts !
There is a great deal of info on the Day Tripper web site , well worth a look .
Obviousley what you bring back depends on your mode of transport , weight limits , money available etc !

Customs checks when coming from the EU

If a customs official from the UK Border Agency (UKBA) thinks you may be bringing in excise goods such as alcohol and tobacco from the EU for commercial use - perhaps to sell to other people or simply for reimbursement - they may ask you questions and make checks. You may be asked about:
    • the type and quantity of goods you've bought
    • why you bought them
    • how you paid for them
    • how often you travel
    • how much you normally smoke or drink
Although there are no limits on the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring in from EU countries, customs officials are more likely to ask you questions if you have more than:
    • 3,200 cigarettes
    • 200 cigars
    • 400 cigarillos
    • 3kg of tobacco
    • 110 litres of beer
    • 90 litres of wine
    • 10 litres of spirits
    • 20 litres of fortified wine (for example port or sherry)
If the UKBA is satisfied that the goods are for a commercial purpose it may seize them and any vehicle used to transport them, and may not return them to you. You can find out more in the guide 'What to do if your goods are seized by customs' under 'More useful links'.
