OP I am afraid I largely agree with you, we have a great many problems caused by population growth and the absolute necessity for economic growth. Negative growth is just not in the equation, we must, simply MUST consume more and more at an ever increasing rate. If we don't we have wide spread disaster, not just economically, in human terms also.
Strangely enough, this subject in general raised itself this weekend for me. My relatively expensive and stylish electric kettle broke. A quick investigation revealed that it was a simple broken connection inside on the switch. Now can I take it apart, no. It is fixed with glue and the screws are of a specialist tool type. I called the manufacturer to discover they can sell me a replacement kettle at lower than market value instead (as no warrantee left), they had no answer for allowing their products to be fixed. A simple fix with a soldering iron would save the kettle, but alas it is now junk, waste. A new one must be produced in china, shipped around the world, driven to a store for me to buy. We have become totally short-sighted, when it is cheaper to replace than fix, from now on I am going to try and only purchase any items that can be repaired. Boycotting this disposable waste culture perpetuated in the need for constant growth.
I feel lucky and slightly embarrassed to say I was glad I was born when I was, children now have a bleak future ahead.
I agree on the disposable point, I make every effort to fix things myself before replacing. Can usually be done with a bit of glue.
What really annoyed me was when my Wii remote broke, I got out the screwdrivers and to my dismay discovered the screws on a Wii remote have not 2 or 4 prongs, but 3!? Who the fk has heard of a screw with 3 prongs. So alas I was unable to get into the damn thing to fix it.Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.0 -

Where does American politics find so many idiots?
"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0
