Global ecoconomic collapse?

Has the world peaked and it's all down hill from now on?...I think so.

I blame capitalism.... (Here comes the rant).

1. The main problem why everything is falling apart is over population. As it stands we're consuming more than the earth has to offer. Yet we continue to grow in numbers. This is the reason why house prices have gone so high and food too. Why does everyone see having children as a good thing. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with having one or two but any more than that is just irresponsible. I think we should do what China did and limit the amount of kids we're allowed to have. If you have more than 2 children then you will get fined and you will be entitlted to no further beneifts. African people are always dying from starvation. We send money out there to help but the truth is, why are they bringing babies into the world with no chance of feeding them? It doesn't make no sense.

2. Graduates unable to get jobs?
Well there's a few reasons for this. More people are going to university so there for - to have a degree is no longer anything special. Especially when they give out these stupid degrees like "Golf course management". Most of the degrees have no actual relevance to working life. So it's no wonder people can't find jobs with them.

3. House prices
Links in with over population once again, high demand, little supply. I saw something in the paper the other day which said that house prices could possibly go up again soon. Which they said was a good thing. How the hell is it a good thing? They are way over valued as it is! How are we supposed to get on the property ladder when it costs £100,000 to buy a counicl house. Unless they build thousands of homes soon it won't get any better. People refusing to sell there homes just because they don't want to make a loss are freezing the market. They have to realize that their homes have been over valuated since the start!

4. Employment (aka imprisonment)
Is it just me or is full time work too long? Eight hours a day just isn't healthly. I've been unable to keep up an active lifestyle (which apparently 'they' encourage). I've had to quit sport and gym becuause there's not enough time left and by the time you come home and eat you have no further energy. I think they should reduce the working time down 7 hours. It's unhealthy to sit around at a desk. No wonder people are obese. Your chained to a desk for god sake. I think every employer must give two free vouchers a week to undertake a physical exercise (tennis, swimming, gym etc). Plus as I said, finish at 4pm.

5. Petrol prices
Once again - over population. Everyone wants a car, but unfortunately people need to realize there's not enough oil to go around. There's not really much to say on this topic, it's going to run out so get on your bike (literally).

So overall, I think all these things are going to get much worse. I think we're totally screwed. There's no way back. But hey it's 2012 next year so we ain't go much time left on this planet anyway.

Suggest to speak to people who lived behind the Iron Curtain for 40 years following the end of WW2 if you feel the alternatives are better.
  • I think the OP throws up some good points . Over population . http://www.unfpa.org/6billion/pages/worldpopgrowth.htm . Makes you think .

Degrees that really do not mean a lot . Golf management is a good point . I am about to do an OU degree in the History of jazz, not for a job but for enjoyment .

House prices are , as the OP rightly points out , are crazy . Further strain on the economy as a fair few people have housing benefit income . To suggest that they should rise again as agood thing is economics of the mad house .

Working hours I don`t agree in full is a bad thing when my Dad did a standard 48 hours a week as a railway engineer . He found a decent amount of time to enjoy his healthy hobbies .

Petrol prices . Finite source and will rise accordingly . Still amazes me at the amount of gas guzzlers that people still drive .

Things are changing and as far as I can see there is no turning back .

No it doesn't make sense, and this subject is something I have raised in the past on this forum. What is it with humans ? We claim to be the most advanced life form on the planet, with the knowledge that our resources are finite and the ability to control our population, yet we seem to be choosing not to. We are obsessed with economic growth, which seems to lead to ever larger demands on the planet's resources. We are like ostriches, heads buried in the sand. Look at what happened with the credit boom, then crunch. Of course, nobody could see that coming, could they ? ;)
30 Year Challenge : To be 30 years older. Equity : Don't know, don't care much. Savings : That's asking for ridicule.

On the plus side, the schools open again soon, so you'll have something to do during the day instead of make up nonsense rambling posts about issues you clearly know nothing about.

I blame capitalism, indeed. Seriously . . . .how old are you?

The UK has no effect on the worlds population. If all 60m of us died tomorrow it wouldn't even effect the estimates, China would probably find 60m hiding in a corner somewhere to balance it.

Also housing is not an apocalyptic problem. The UK has plenty more space to fit housing, loads of space for high rise flats. There are far more densely populated places in the world than anywhere in the UK.
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

I work 9-10 hour days sometimes and still manage to do 3-4 exercise sessions a week. Think you're just making excuses here.

None of your rant has anything to do with capitalism, by the way.

You've been unable to keep up an active lifestyle because you're in the office 40 hours a week? Come on; get real.

I'm in the office 45ish hours a week and spend another 8 hours or so in the car getting there and back. I manage to train for 10 hours a week. The TV programmers help you in this respect - who'd want to spend an evening sat in watching that drivel?

Take a trip to Thailand or China - they're working much longer hours but if you get yourself into a public park at 5am you'll find it packed with people exercising (for free).

I have caught celebrity big brother a couple of times though. There's a short fat Aussie (he's a 'celebrity' but I don't know who he is - I only know Jedward and Kerry Katona). This chap has a really impressive 6-pack - given that he's rather stout you may wonder how he achieved this. Well he's had implants under his stomach skin but on top of his fat - I kid you not.

The saddest thing about this thread is that the OP has received 7 thanks. Now, one of those is from rewired whose sole contribution to MSE forums is to thank every single post he reads (despite never having written a post himself), so his doesnt count.

But DervProv? Seriously? Did you read this nonsense?
  • OP I am afraid I largely agree with you, we have a great many problems caused by population growth and the absolute necessity for economic growth. Negative growth is just not in the equation, we must, simply MUST consume more and more at an ever increasing rate. If we don't we have wide spread disaster, not just economically, in human terms also.

Strangely enough, this subject in general raised itself this weekend for me. My relatively expensive and stylish electric kettle broke. A quick investigation revealed that it was a simple broken connection inside on the switch. Now can I take it apart, no. It is fixed with glue and the screws are of a specialist tool type. I called the manufacturer to discover they can sell me a replacement kettle at lower than market value instead (as no warrantee left), they had no answer for allowing their products to be fixed. A simple fix with a soldering iron would save the kettle, but alas it is now junk, waste. A new one must be produced in china, shipped around the world, driven to a store for me to buy. We have become totally short-sighted, when it is cheaper to replace than fix, from now on I am going to try and only purchase any items that can be repaired. Boycotting this disposable waste culture perpetuated in the need for constant growth.

I feel lucky and slightly embarrassed to say I was glad I was born when I was, children now have a bleak future ahead.

You could perhaps try answering a few of the OP's points? What nonsense? What is nonsensical to you? Please explain.

"saddest"? Why does this post or people thanking him make you feel sad?
