seat allocation?

Hi all. Not an experienced traveller, just twice & had never heard of seat allocation. I always just thought they were allocated when you got there & a couple would sit together - as we have on our 2 other trips.
We're travelling from Manchester to Reus on 30th September & online check-in is not available.
I just wondered, as we are 2 hefty blokes, what would be the chances, if the flight isn't full of us getting a row of 3 for the 2 of us. More for the comfort of other passengers than us, I already know my seat is going to be uncomfortable & cramped, that's my fault, but I have felt embarrassed for the normal sized person sitting next to me & try to avoid "overflowing" as little as possible.
I asked the rep in going places & she was very matter of fact & said if the flight wasn't full, they would do that if they could.
Do you think that would involve a really early check-in & was I just being fed a line?

What airline are you flying with?

  • Why don't you just buy 3 seats between the two of you?
  • I've seen the cabin crew re-arrange seating once people are on-board if they notice that someone is quite large and making other passengers uncomfortable - you can't depend on that happening because it depends on the crew and availability of alternative seats.

The only way to guarantee you get more room is to book an extra seat.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Or get a seat in the pointy end!
  • I can understand you concern, believe me the person sitting with you will be the one to ask to move if at all possible...

However I would ask at the check in desk, get there for a reasonably early check in, seats will have been pre filled - Are you travelling with Monarch.. you could call them up and ask about the additional cost

Hopefully the flight won t be full
  • Thanks for the replies folks. It's a Thomas Cook package. We wouldn't buy 3 seats because as I said it's uncormfortable & I expect it to be so, but it's only just over 2 hours flying. If it is full, I'll just ask for aisle seats if poss, at least then I can lean outwards away from a potentially unhappy fellow passenger, as I did last time. I am acutely aware of my size & it's impact on others.

Last time we flew with TC (a couple of years ago), we arrived early at the airport and were told that all seats were pre-allocated on 'best fit' basis and there was no changing allocated seats.
