pigs eat a pure veggie diet now. the days of slops is long gone. you can't even feed them an apple from your kitchen.

I didn't know Young's had changed to using Basa fish,i used to buy it all the time, after buying a new packet it tasted awful and i didn't know why,i complained to them and they told me they had started using Basa fish.

I can tell the difference, that's why i stopped buying it,each to their own and all that.

    ??

This thread is about basa fillets - sold as basa fillets - no subterfuge possible. You must be talking about some other Youngs product that includes some generic, unstated, fish and they've changed the recipe recently?

As regards taste, as you say, each to their own - can't see any prob with basa fish taste myself.

Can't see how they feed is relevant though - loads of fish that we all eat regularly (all flat fish for instance) are bottom feeders. Nought wrong with bottom feeding of course - unless you think it's to do with bottoms. Which of course it isn't - it's just feeding at the bottom of the sea...
  • I found them early last week in Dundee Sth Rd. They were not in the cabinet (where I'd been looking for them as I was happy to buy them at £2.50) but in the end freezer full of offers. I spied them on the way to the checkout and was super chuffed they were only £1.25. They were tucked in a corner but loads were in stock. Sadly my freezer is too full of magnums for me to buy more.:D

I researched this fish a few years ago when it was starting to become popular here. There was 1, yes only 1 article written about the way the fish is farmed and ALL the "bad" articles use the first as a source. This original article was journalistic rather than scientific and tbh the writer seemed to have an agenda. I am happy to buy this fish until I am convinced otherwise so could the naysayers please quote your sources so I can read more. Thanks..

    It's only a game

Ours was promoting them in the end of the freezer section at the correct price. I nabbed a couple of bags. Yet to try em but I agree it is what you do with fish when you cook it that makes the difference. I'm gonna boil mine in milk then flake the fish and make a White sauce with the milk. Season, add to the fish then top with creamy mash and a few knobs of butter. Hey presto, fish Pie! Mmmmm.

I will probably add the salmon trimmings that I have in the freezer too!

I didn't know anything about Basa fish or it being a bottom feeder until i received the letter from Young's themselves, that's what they told me,i'm paraphrasing about what they said about the taste of it,but something along the lines of it having a stronger taste.

Anyway,it mustn't be the same fish product that i bought.
  • A fish that feeds off bottoms...hmmm think i'll give it a miss
