From BT phone & O2 broadband to Plusnet?

I need to substantially reduce my landline and my broadband monthly outgoings.

I have my landline (free eve & weekend calls) with BT for £13.90pcm and my calls average £7.30 which adds up to £21pcm.
I have home broadband with O2 at £18 pcm
Combined total is £39pcm

I have read the mse articles and forums and I would like to change to Plusnet Value Broadband, normally £6.49, half price offer for £3.24 and 3 months free. Also Plusnet landline at £11.99. Totals £15.23, saving me on average £24pcm. That's £288 in a year.

I must give O2 7 days notice to cancel.
BT I've done my 18 months contract so probably 7 days.

Can Plusnet still be got via Topcashback?
Anything else I should know or do?
Thank you so much. I need to do this without delay.

  • You may well have already done this - some offers are only available at certain exchanges. For example, we couldn't have the Plusnet prices you state at our exchange. So if you go through the Plusnet sign up process you can see "your" price before committing anything and make sure that is available to you.

You will need something called a "MAC Code" from O2 which you'll be given when you call to cancel, and you give that code to Plusnet. Otherwise you'll probably be stung for a broadband "removal" fee as one service terminates before the other starts.

Finally some BT plans automatically renew (e.g. 12 months ends, then renews for another 12 months) so you'd need to verify that as BT contracts sometimes turn out to be a lot longer than people thought they were.

If you have free evenings and weekend calls you are ALMOST definitely in one of BT's auto renewing 12 month contracts which, you will probably find, started when your initial 18 month contract term finished - so be prepared for a cancellation fee from BT!!!

Also, as M-I-H has already stated, unless you are on a market 3 (or some market 2) exchange you won't get such a good deal from Plusnet as you hope! Check your exchange at http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search

    1. You're forgetting to add on the £7.30 calls per month,so actually £22.53 you would be better ordering Value BB and Anytime calls £18.73 if your calls are £7.30 per month

2.Bt I believe is 14 days notice after contract completion, though you need to check as Mark says it was not an auto-renewal.

3.Yes currently Topcashback offering £38.38 for BB and phone signups.

If you are spending £7.30pm on exclusive calls then you should switch to Anytime, you are clearly on the wrong tariff (assuming that those are standard landline calls made in the daytime).
£18pm for broadband is far too high, you are presumably on the dire O2 Access tariff.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks to all of you who replied, in particular Steve for mentioning that I had not factored in the call charges.

I have given BT and O2 notice to terminate. Both have 7 days notice period. O2 made me a half price offer but I have another grievance with them so I declined.

I have signed up with Plusnet for what I am told will be a seemless transfer. There is an added cost I didn't mention and that's £4.99 p+p for the router.

Anyone reading this and wanting the Topcashback £38.38, may be interested to learn that in this case the cost is £6.49pcm and must be completed wholly online via Topcashback. For the 1/2 price deal there is no cash back. I opted to pay £3.24pcm. It adds up to the same after the 12 months contract and it is better for budgeting and I don't risk the cashback not tracking.

Did you check that there was no contractual period in force for BT?? The Free evenings/weekends rental package (£13.90 pm) is (AFAIA) a 12 Month auto renewing contract.
  • brewer, I was on a 12 months contract with BT and it has run its course, putting me on 7 days notice.

I got the router from Plusnet today, so were very fast.
I also got the return bag from O2 so will find the original box it came in.
