problems with digital tv signal

Hi
I've done a search for this topic but couldn't find anything, if it's already on a forum could someone point me in the right direction please.
Meanwhile, does anybody out there know anything about digital tv signals? I watch tv through a Telewest cable box as my analogue signal is very poor. Having recently bought a hard drive DVD recorder with built in Freeview (should be able to watch one channel & record another) I had to get a new aerial to receive the digital signals but it isn't very good. All the channels are there and the picture quality is good but the picture keeps stopping while the audio continues, also the audio has very loud 'clicks' throughout. I recorded a film from ITV3 late at night recently but the stuttering picture and 'clicking' made it unwatchable.
I haven't tried scanning for digital radio signals yet as I thought I would try to sort out the picture problems first.
Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks in advance

It depends what type of aerial you have bought. It sound like you do not have sufficient signal strength. Is it an external roof aerial of a set-top type?

This site give details of your local transmitter and the recommended type of aerial to use.

It's a roof top aerial and I think it is a hi-gain one, I had a look at the link you posted and I'm probably going to need an amplified extra hi-gain aerial. The chap who fitted the aerial did say when I phoned to get a quote that this might be the case but he didn't say what I should look for to indicate an inadequate aerial.

    Thanks very much
