Where to stay in Amsterdam

Anyone any suggestions for where to stay in amsterdam, ive tried ibis for hotels and its coming up with over a thou euro for 4 night stay for 4/5 which is daft when ive found a hostel for 589 euro. I was really after something ore than a hostel, something like an apartment sort of thing. I thought of an apartment as might be cheaper than a hotel.

When are you going?
I have a friend who has been a couple of times and raves about the place she stayed...I obviously wasn't paying attention because I can't recall the name of it but I'll ask her!Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -

There are a few nice 3 and 4* places on Dam Square for £500-£550 on lastminute.com- my mate stayed in a really expensive place but she said the best thing about it was the location on Dam Square that means you're right in the centre of things and it's easy to get to all the attractions.
If you have a look on lastminute you can sort by distance from attractions - if you choose Dam Square it'll show you the ones I mean.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -

I have spent 3 nights with 3 of my friends at the Greenhouse Effect, they have townhouses with all the rooms converted into themed rooms and is in a great central location... Dont be put off by the fact that it's ran by a coffee shop the place is not too near there and once you've checked in then thats it really.
We stayed in the attic suite which was very nice and clean, it was great. The only problem is as per the name its the top room in the attic and involved a lot of stairs :-/

I normally rent a house in the Jordaan(Just around the corner from Anne Frank House) when I stay there. Have use of a garden and a full kitchen. There are three sleeping areas. One double bedroom with a double bed, another with two single beds and a single room. Price will probably come in in the middle of your two quotes.
If you can't find anything, let me know and I'll pass on the contact details.0 -
look at amsterdamhouse.com for houseboats - we stayed in one that slept 6 and was right near the flower market
also check out the winston hotel0 -
Try the Stayokay chain. These are marketed as hostels but felt more upmarket than that. We stayed in the Zeeburg one but there are others in Amsterdam. Much cheaper than other hotels in the city and we were really happy with it.0
