I'm quite surprised that a cherry tree would be fruiting now. I believe that most cherries are in season a lot earlier. Mine fruits in June/July and is the first of my trees to produce fruit. Also if I'm not quick the birds eat most of them. I personally wouldn't risk it unless I was definitely sure it was a cherry. Maybe try looking at the leaves. They are quite distinctive.
I'm sure someone else will come along with better advice soon.:)

I think you will find they are crab apples, not cherries, as Poppea says, UK cherry season was June / July

What colour are the leaves? Is the the bark smooth or sort of snakeskin [as a cherry is ]

Have a bite [spit out, do not swallow] if it is bitter then crab apple is what it is

If they are still on the tree you can bet they are bitter, or the birds would have had them ages ago
