Declaring medical problems on Travel Insurance

Hi, we have booked in the last couple of days, a few days away in France to be taken in 3 and a half weeks time. I was going to sit down at the pc and book the travel insurance on-line today but now my wife is complaining of back ache and I am unsure whether it needs to be declared when I apply.

It started yesterday evening and she had a restless night's sleep because of it and it is still painfull this morning. She has called the out of hours GP and they believe it could be a trapped nerve. They have suggested taking the max amount of Ibuprofen and paracetamol allowed and to see her own GP tomorrow.

She has been lucky to get to to 42 with no previous back pain issues and this is all very sudden. Should we apply today and not mention it as it has not been properly diagnosed yet or declare a problem to the insurer when she has not had previous complaints of this kind. Or just hold fire for a couple of days until the doctor has examined her.

I suppose I am trying to know if this should be mentioned as I understand medical problems can increase premiums and if declaring this is unnecessary I won't.

    Back problems?
But on holiday she goes down with something else? Broken leg say?
Will they still pay out if they find a discrepancy in your declaration?
They will look for any excuse not to pay out.

  • You need to declare any condition , unless it is on the list not to be declared as always included. This is harder to find online, but you should be able to pick up from the policy schedule.. medical conditions section.

If you think there is any way you would cancel if your wife got no better you will not be insured. She has been to the doc and it will be on her record. Thats why you should always take insurance at the time of booking.

However as a back sufferer, even tho I have been bad it has never stopped me travelling. I would recommend she get to see an osteopath ASAP and lets them see what they think if its not gone a lot better in 2 days. The GP will do very little believe me they just tell you to take the pills

Hi, backpain is mentioned in the list of medical conditions but as she has not had it diagnosed yet by her GP should it be mentioned?

If I booked it today - after the telephone consultation with an out of hours GP but before a diagnosis by her own GP - without declaring it would the insurers be more likely to reject a claim for cancellation if needed or medical cover while abroad?
  • As mentioned previously, insurers will try anything to avoid paying and your wife will now have back pain on her medical records. The best thing to do is find a quote online then call the company for advice. If it pushes up the premium too much, look again.
