Goa - currency exchange

Hi,

We're going to Goa in a few weeks and obviously need to take some spending money. I gather that you cannot buy Indian rupees anywhere outside India, so I'm wondering what the most cost effective way of exchanging currency is.

Is it better to take USD travellers cheques and exchange them in a local bank in Goa (I'd get stung for two exchanges)? Or are UKP travellers cheques just as good? Or is it worth I just taking some cash?

If you can't buy rupees outside India, I guess the airport exchange bureau (if one exists) is packed every time a flight lands too?

Thanks.

GB pound travellers cheques are OK, as is cash & money from ATMs

Why would you want to use dollar TCs?

Because there's a black market in USD ... or there used to be. So you can often claim a discount for paying in USD.

Not worth hassle in my opinion - as you say, GBP are accepted widely and everything's as cheap as chips anyway :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Don't know what Goa is like, but landing in Mumbai last year it was easy to exchange in the airport. Lots of exchange bureaus as well so they weren't that crowded. I just paid for my rupees with cold hard british cash (not travellers cheques). My friend had to pay a higher exchange rate though as she used Scottish pounds, not English ones.

Credit card was also widely accepted in Mumbai so I only needed cash for smaller items like food, taxis etc

Make sure you keep the encashment slip for your rupees (or the ATM slip if you use a cashpoint) as you will need this to exchange your rupees back into british money before you leave.
