Road Map USA

We're having a road trip in the USA next month. We have a hire car with sat nav, co pilot on the phone and printed routes using google maps. Can anyone recommend a good road map for California? A large print one would be good
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

  • The rough guide map of California is really good
  • Provided you don't mind arriving without the road map, I would suggest that you wait until you get there to buy one.

Just stop off at the first Walmart or interstate service plaza that you come to and you will be able to pick up a good one for about $10.

Rand McNally do the best road maps and atlasses for the USA. Years ago I bought one, similar style to our atlasses, but with each state on its own page.

California is 350 miles wide and close to 800 miles N-S. We have a huge Rand Mcnally (can't find it, but from recollection its about a3 size) like you mention and its pretty crap for California.
If you stick to the main roads its fine, but the scale makes it pretty useless for the more out of the way locations.
Better than nothing, and along with the sat nav might be good enough for you.

Funnily enough we forgot to take ours with us this summer and spent ages trying to find something decent. Failed miserably.

Yup. As far as I am aware, there are no decent road maps of the USA.

This is the one we have:

Although I've just had a look and can't find it ! Don't remember using it too much as we had sat nav but for less than 7 quid it's worth having in the car as a backup.

Get yourself a AAA map when in the states, American Automobile Association. Best by a country mile.

We always use rand McNally Easy To Read maps (we don't use SatNav) and would recommend these.
Have used the California one on two roadtrips with no problems at all.
I always buy them from Amazon (about £3.50-£4.00 each)

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

  • We drove 4,500 miles over 5 weeks in the USA using just the maps from gas stations... No sat navs involved. Navigating in the states is easy

This is the best one I could find in the UK, it's not a really big scale map but it is just California so better than a full USA one, it about A4 size.

The maps are various scales it includes city/town maps & places of interest & journey mileages & planner.
