DVD thingies

I'm now (at last) looking to get a DVD recorder but don't know which one.

Need one that can record one channel (including Freeview) while I'm watching another. Also want one that has hard disc as well as playing/recording to DVD's.

Can anyone suggest one?

Why not just a PVR (hard disk recorder)? A DVD recorder is really only of use for long term archiving. Whereas a PVR is really a one-touch device.
If so, the Humax PVR 9300T is the one to go for (unless you want HD recording).
Just go for one with the 320 or 500GB hard drive and that shoud be adequate for most purposes. Have a look at Richer Sounds for decent deals.

Maybe that's what the OP wants to do.....

OP, I use Panasonics. I've never bought anything else, whether VHS, DVD recorder or HDD/DVD recorder.

For usability and reliability they get my vote. All of mine have had single tuners, though, so you'd have to browse around their range to see if there's a twin-tuner available......

Which magazine did a study some years ago and found that the actual working quality of the dearest makes was no better than that of the cheapest. I've been a fan of Pansonic too but I have had other players and recorders which were just as good and lasted just as long. I've never actually had one fail on me.

Apart from perhaps wanting to keep something, would the Humax do this?:
    as well as playing/...DVDs
I'm also a fan of Panasonic but they don't seem to have anything suitable.

The suggestion from GlynD does look pretty good. I'll sleep on it and probably order one tomorrow.

    Thanks all.

There is this one from Panasonic which fits the bill. http://www.prcdirect.co.uk/dvd/dvd-recorder/dmrxw380ebk/product

Humax don't do a DVD recorder - just set-top boxes with hard drives. Nothing to stop you linking up a DVD recorder to a Humax receiver though. I think a SCART cable would be enough.

Yes, you can keep it on the Hummy for as long as you like, but the hard drive will obviously fill up if you never delete anything! The point about the Hummy is the ease of using one-touch recording/playback/series record/chase play etc. No DVD recorder can offer that.
The 2 machines are designed for different tasks.

Of course you also have the option of installing an external hard-drive to the Humax. That can be as big as you like AFAIK.

My Panasonic HDD/DVD will do all of that.

The older Panasonic DVD recorders that I have will also do all of it apart from series record.

They'll do it, but the point I was making is the ease of the interface on the Humax.
DVD recorders are far better for long term archiving. For everything else, PVR's are the best choice.
