Hubby has wiped all my uni work!

He was taking off vista and putting xp back on. I reminded him to back everything up and he reckons he did (he's usually v good with computers ,builds them from scratch etc...). However, I've come to add something to a bit of work I'd not long started and now can't find my file full stop. Theres 2 years of college work and one term of uni nursing stuff and the whole lot seems to have gone.

Only good thing is that I'd only done about a page on this assignment so can redo that, but I'm gutted that the rest seems to have gone.
Also, if uni need proof that it's my work, they're gonna have to pick over the innards to find traces aren't they?

Did he not back it up when he put Vista on? Could you not use that backup to recover your files?

Sorry but if you have no backup's I don't know of any easy way to recover the files. How did he wipe vista off? did he just re-format the hard drive?

He's probably (hopefully) backed it up to CD somewhere. Wait til he gets home before accusing him of things :p

if you try and recover it, you will need to restore onto a seperate disk. Data cannot be recovered onto the same disk.

Also avoid putting anything new onto the computer, or install the bare minimum, as it will greatly increase the chances of the data being over written with each new bit of info/data put onto the computer

I lost all my mp3's and managed to got them all back, so it is possible. But that was from my backup disk which didn't have anything else on it.

    good luck

    Thanks for the advice guys.
He had an old disc from when he backed up in April so I've got the majority of my college stuff back. Just tried a couple of recovery programmes but looks like the uni stuff is gone.

One alternative possibility is to use a knoppix live cd (runs a version of linux off a cd). [use this when you are unable to boot into windows etc.] Then try and get hold of a recovery utility for linux and see what you can recover. If you can boot into Vista then no prob use that with one of the utils mentioned.

i cant rember cause i dont use window but vista was meant to have an sql abstraction layer over ntfs, that will screw up any software recovery programs since i doubt microsoft have released any specs on it.

that said if microsoft dropped it due or didnt impliment it and the windows reinstall didnt write over the files then you may be able to get files back but i doubt it sorry
