011 Caller ID

I got home this evening and checked if anyone had phoned my landline while I was out. There had been one call which had left the caller ID 011 but had not left a message on voicemail.

Has anyone any idea who or what this could have been? I suspect some sort of glitch on the line but your collective brains may know otherwise.

Absoluely anyone! The sad fact is, users get presented with whatever the originating network (or user, if they have a digital connection to the exchange) it is called CLIP (Calling Line Identity Ppesentation) the 'real' or actual number of the line is suppressed, and one selected by the caller is shown. This can be blamk, corrupted, totally false, or a valid number calls can be returned to (like an 0800, for example).

More often than not, if the number starts 00 it will be International, and with '1' being the North America code, you've had a call from that area, but not the full number, but if truth be told, there really is no way of finding out unless you are a Telco and are required to trace the originating number, which doesn't make it to domestic CLI displays.

False CLIs are normally used by cold callers to circumvent anonymous call reject (the call is not anonymous because it presents a CLI, albeit a false one).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

If you don't recognise the number, it is almost certainly someone trying to sell you something you don't want..............
  • Thanks folks. Much as I suspected. I'll add 011 to my TrueCall zap list.
