Clone HDD - How

  • Personally I wouldn't clone the disk; mainly because you're not just going to copy across everything you want, you're going to copy across all the crap you don't want.
I'd build it from scratch, reinstall all your software onto it and then copy all your data. Once that's done I'd blitz your old hard drive and then create a clone / backup copy of it; so the next time you need to rebuild a machine you've got a clean copy instead of your current 'dirty' one.

I would actually suggest this too. In the past I've done a bit-copy of a disk to clone it, and it worked fine.

But Windows always seems to run quicker after a fresh install. Nowadays I don;t mind spending the extra time to install everything as it's like starting with a new machine.
  • although it should read 'create a clone / back up of your new drive on the old one'.... not blitzing the old drive and then creating a backup of a blank drive... cos that'd be silly.

I copied/cloned the win xp partition with clonezilla - no problem - saved it on a usb hdd

    installed sata 1tb drive

    swapped drives on pc

used gparted to partition the new 1tb drive - primary 100gb - scondary 900gb approx

booted clonezilla - restored win xp

    all looked good

    removed clonezilla cd - rebooted

    uh-ho no boot sector found

booted with win xp install disk - selected repair option

    still no boot disk

booted with win xp install disk - selected repair option again

    got to a c:\windows prompt

here there are a few tools/cmds - fixmbr, and so on

    still won't boot

how can i get the dik to boot up?

    cheers

On a laptop with a recovery partition I've cloned the disk, fixed partition sizes, changed it over then once it was running OK I then went into recovery mode and restored to factory settings then reinstalled updates & other software. Means there's less chance of MS-nanny getting all upset with your "illegal" copy of Windows
