Admiral do a lot of marketing for their multicar policies - might be worth a look. You can't quote multicar policies on most of the usual comparison sites.

  • Yeah, I tried a few comparison sites. They let me get all the way to the end of the process just to tell me they couldn't provide a quote - very frustrating. Think I had the same with Direct Line too. I think I may have to phone rather than going for the online quote thing.

    Small update.

I called Direct Line and they said unless I was already on their policy they will not give me a discount for driving as a named driver. Coop's online quote was in the region of 1100 for one car, I did not bother to call them after that. Admiral's multicar quote was 1300 for two cars.

I then made quotes through comparethemarket, gocompare, confused and moneysupermaket. The results are all similar there is no point to use multiple sites.

At this point I was considering yesinsurance for 500 pounds but after reading reviews decided I do not want to deal with them. In the end I bought insurance from Direct Line for 650. Not the cheapest but we dealt with them before and had a good experience. I will be a named driver again but at least I will get my own ncb on Direct Line policy.

After looking at results of search I started to wonder about competition in the insurance market. Almost all top positions where occupied by companies administered by BISL (yesinsurance, barclays, loyds, M&S, hsbc and many others). They give slightly different quotes (10-20 pounds difference) and give an impression of competition in the market place but in reality it is just one company behind. Am I correct in this conclusion?

Although not massively loved by everyone (myself included), Swiftcover do this. I have 8years NCD on my Polo and they mirrored that up to their maximum (5 years) on the C Max. If I stay claim free, I will have 9 and 6 in January.

Do you mean you bought insurance in your wife's name online, putting her down as zero ncd, with her as the main driver, and you as a named driver on this car as well?

I've never found a multi car policy that's cheaper than individual ones.

    .

I have. Saved £5-600 this year with a multicar policy over individual costs (3 cars).

Yes, this is what I did. It was a cheapest option. She has her license longer then me. If she is a main driver the insurance is cheaper.

Is she actually the main driver of both cars though?

We share cars in the same proportion. But most companies do not allow to specify this kind of usage therefore I have to pick one of us to be a main driver. Do you think it may raise unnecessary questions in future?

I'd have thought it was unusual for a couple to have 2 cars and not be main driver of 1 each personally. I don't think 'fronting' comes into it when it's husband and wife, but it still looks odd to have 2 cars and 1 person who drives each more.

Although in my case, now that I don't work, I suppose my OH drives 2 of our cars most of the time, and I drive the other almost exclusively. I think they're insured with me being main driver of 2 of them though because when I was working, and OH was based from home, I was commuting in one or other of them.

    I'm confusing myself now! :rotfl:
