what does a company accountant do?

im about to start business as a company from currently being self employed.
I know that legally I need an accountant as a company, and that I need to give them a copy of all my receipts / invoices etc.. but beyond these two very broad points I know nothing.
Do I still need to do all my accounting myself like I do now? And the accountant is just there to produce all the legal documents and make sure I have all my costs covered?
I'd be very grateful if someone could post a few specific points about a) what I must do with regards to my accounts and b) what my accountant does.

You don't LEGALLY need an accountant - just use one if you need the help.
As a company you will need to file your annual accounts at companies house within 10 months of your year end.0 -
To be honest I run a couple of companies from home myself and my account is worth many times what I pay him each year as he advises me of tax I can claim back..money I can write off against my businesses and also advised me to set up a company to legally pay the least tax in the UK.
Most accountants will give you a free comsultation anyway so might be worth making a visit to a few and then you can decide. Most will only charge you forb any work they do so no upfront fees.0
