^^^^^^ no, you're not supposed to use the windows drivers !!!! let windows detect the hardware, and it'll open the new hardware wizard. On the second or third step (can't remember OTTOMH) it will ask you to insert the disk with the driver on. Windows will then pick up the driver off the cd. Job done. You should never run the install disk, or use windows drivers if you have the specific ones :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I was not trying to use Windows Drivers - just checking whether Windows even recognised that a new device had been plugged in - it didn't !!
I have had 2 suggestions from Netgear's automated robot answering device - suggesting that I a) disable my antivirus b) disable my firewall - to try to install he device - neither makes any difference - so I am about to return it from whence it came !!

^^^^ yeah, it is beginning to sound like you've got a duff one :( It does happen from time to time. I'd get a refund and go to a local pc place/maplin/etc and you'll probably pick one up for a lot less than pcw, okay not at ebay prices, but still better than pcw :)

Maplin offer Edimax or Linkys - which should I try ?
  • Maplins sure are expensive - look at post no 4. Go for a TP Link N 150mbps or 300mbps PCI adapter from Amazon. For testing purposes I carry this little adapter around with me http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330500151014?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 it is quite brilliant. I have a whole range of adapters to hand and all of them work. As you have tried PCI and USB adapters, you appear to be unlucky in not getting them to work. Hopefully third time lucky :)

if that's all they're doing these days I wouldn't bother and go with the ebay one quoted above - it probably works better than either. I only suggested maplin, etc. if you wanted to walk in off the street and pick one up, and they used to do a couple of "value" ones which worked very well and were under a tenner.....

I finally sorted it - using a £10 novatech USB adapter - which installed just great on my 64 bit machine
I am assuming that this was the problem ....
Anyway - my connection speed is virtually identical to that using a network cable - so I am happy
    :)
