    Premier was/is a branding exercise.
And not a very good one I think _ whose brand is it anyway? Barclays or HSBC's? Reminds me of the "Won't make a drama out of a crisis" strapline - whose was that?

HSBC made Premier notorious when they started banning their non-Premier customers from using certain branches - Sandbanks near Poole in Dorset was one I believe.

AT Barclays, some branches used to have a special counter with no queue for Premier - not sure if they still do.

In the 20 years I've had a Premier tag on my main account the only benefit I think I've got from it was the winter sports travel insurance for me my family and all additional cardholders for my one annual fee on that gold card I mentioned that was omce joined at the hip with the current account "relationship" but then became more orangey-yellow and metamorphosed into something I could log in to on the Barclaycard website. Oh and in the last few years before I ditched it, it was quite good for soliciting a slightly benused look from bank staff when I've asked them to remind me what the benefits were. I particularly remember once being told that I'd have to renegotiate my overdraft if I ditched the card account. Needless to say, that wasn't true when I actually did cancel.

I think Premier is actually just a moving feast which they regurgitate from time time, and I am sure we'll never get fat on it.

Why is this blackmail? They're introducing a charge, if you don't like it go elsewhere, simples.

Depends if you buy into Brands and the perceived prestige that they bring;)
