  • Thanks for the replies everyone, much appreciated!

The washer I have had problems with for quite some time. If I hold the washer thing in, nothing comes out, however if I do "short bursts" i get squirts of water coming out, which is why I think it may be a pump issue as it cannot seem to cope with pro-longed sprays. The rear one dribbles out sufficiently enough to clean the window, but I think that's just thanks to gravity.

Ok, well, ignore the exhaust, it's a non issue but could become one next year. After market Catalytic converters can be had for as little as £60 so don't worry too much - you've got a year to do your research.
As for the washer pump: if it's not something silly like the tanks empty, then it's probably worth just getting the whole tank and unit off of ebay from a car being broken and just replace the lot, making sure you clean the pipes whilst you do it. It's always worth using a pin to clear out the washer jet nozzles too, they sometimes clog up with crud.
And the parking brake will most likely be an adjustment at the cable, or possibly a slightly seized caliper or arm which most garages would work free and then grease up for you. Worst case would be a replacement caliper at perhaps £100 fitted.
So, I'd think you could sort that lot for £200 including tyres.

Emissions and rust near suspension points are the really scary MOT fails, everything else is sortable.

I feel as if it is a non-issue but the mechanic at the garage is saying it is a failure point. When I ask him why he hasn't submitted it with everything else on the failure form he just says he isn't obliged too - I thought it was a legal document?!

I have a tread checker and I didn't think they were below legal tread depth requirements. They are both worn on the inside sides where it isn't as easily accessable.
    .

Seriously? Did it never once ever occur to you to put the steering in full lock thus exposing the tread and making it very easily accessible?

Saying that, its a poorly serviced car and its only really dim bulbs who send cars in for MOTs with bald tyres...

Far to much effort for some.
