refund request

Just picking brains really. I'm a private seller and list as 'no returns'

I sold a pack of rechargeable batteries which were sealed in their pack for £1.50 (well just under;))

buyer tells me they don't work and want a refund. No way I could have known this as they were sealed

well it's going to cost more than £1.50 for her to send them back - is she going to expect me to pay the postage for the return and refund her original cost plus postage paid?

Shall I tell her to send them back at her own expense and I will refund the purchase price?

For that I wouldn't bother!

Jut tell her to bin them, and refund the original postage + the purchase price.

as above and also get him/her to agree a cancellation so you can get your final fees back.

If the items don't work the buyer is still entitled to a refund, "no returns" means very little with Paypal and eBay guaranteeing their payments for 45 days. If you let it go to a dispute you will probably still have to accept a return but will likely get poor feedback and a mark on your account. If you refund now with good grace, you will probably escape a neg and too many low stars - but that's because you will have solved a problem you are responsible for.

Put yourself in their position - you'd be unhappy if you paid for something. If you are a private seller and these have been around a while, they could have been either a bad batch or be out of date. Buyers have rights in law about items that are faulty or misdescribed, even from private sellers. You can't simply sell something and expect buyers to put up with something that doesn't work.

If you can't be bothered to pay to get them back in what is presumably an unsellable condition, then you should just refund them the entire original payment and ask for a cancellation. They should really not be out of pocket on something like this either, so it should be a return at your expense. They probably wouldn't bother returning at their own expense, but that's not their problem as they do have rights in this situation and believe it or not you have responsibilities.

You cannot continue to sell on eBay thinking that buyers should just suck up the costs of bad or faulty items. You need to get a grip on your responsibilities and stop assuming buyers feel the same way as you do, particularly when you are on the other side of the equation and there is money at stake which belongs to the buyer and was given to you for something that was described as working.
